Description
Though Gaura, commonly known as Wandflower, are native to the plains of North America, ‘Rosy Jane’ was discovered as a chance seedling by Rob & Rosy Hardy of Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants in the UK. Even so, it still shares the toughness and beauty of the American native species being easy to grow and heat, cold and drought tolerant when established. Rosy Jane is an airy perennial beauty that will please you and the butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators all summer long and into fall with its abundant wands of fluttering, butterfly-shaped picotee flowers having white petals prominently edged in deep pink. The long flower stems are great for cutting and use in flower arrangements. The upright arching foliage might reach 2 to 3 feet tall and wide in flower making it an ideal choice as an accent in small garden beds or in groupings or drifts where space allows. You might be happy to know that Gaura is not on the deer or rabbit menu!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 24 to 36 inches tall and wide, Rosy Jane Guara is ideal for planting as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings or drifts in sunny borders or perennial gardens. It serves as great centerpiece in combination container gardens with other sun loving perennials. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, rock gardens, wildflower gardens, cottage gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
Gaura is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Established plants have good drought tolerance but constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. For best flowering, we suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Deadheading spent flowers spikes is not necessary but encourages new growth and heavier rebloom.
